Cervical Smear Testing

A cervical screening test, or smear test, is a method of detecting abnormal (pre-cancerous) cells in the cervix in order to prevent cervical cancer. The cervix is the entrance to the womb from the vagina.

The doctors at The Vale Medical Centre strongly advise all our female patients up to the age of 64 to have a cervical smear test.

This is offered to all women every three years.  As this is a national requirement that women are offered this service you will be sent a reminder automatically from the Health Authority.

Most of these changes will not lead to cervical cancer and the cells may go back to normal on their own. However, in some cases, the abnormal cells need to be treated to prevent them becoming cancerous.

For more information please visit

Cervical Smear Disclaimer Form

If you decide you do not want a cervical smear please download, print and complete the Cervical Smear Disclaimer Form (right click and select Save As). Once completed, return this form to the surgery by post or next time you call at the surgery so we can remove you from our list.  Of course you may change your mind at any time by contacting the surgery for an appointment.
